The Hills are alive...Salzburg, a Special Place in my heart

Since seeing the sound of music, I always wanted to see Austria.  Well, it did NOT disappoint.  Salzburg was truly amazing.

When I arrived, it was pouring rain.  Well rain doesn’t usually detour me but it was also a little chilly.  I debated staying in all night and glad that I didn’t.  I walked around downtown and found the Mirabell Gardens which was beautiful even in the rain.  I must say though that I made the wrong call bringing my Nikes instead of my waterproof Brooks; I am sure I will regret this again in Ireland.  I thought I would do more running so made the sacrifice, I have only run once and have hiked and been in the rain more.  Lesson learned. Luckily, my lovely apartment also had an umbrella.

The next morning, due to several recommendations, I did the Sound of Music Tour.  Yes, it’s as cheesey as it sounds.  It’s a sing along bus tour and people really do sing.  But it was rather awesome.  You get to see great scenery, hear inside facts about the movie and some Austrian History.  You see mountains, lakes, castles and they served drinks.  What could be wrong.  Even the rain was not a big deal.

After I found a place on trip advisor with good Schnitzel and Wild Boar Sausage and potatoes with of course a huge beer.  During lunch, sitting in a restaurant surrounded by strangers, pouring rain but a view of the alps outside the window, I realized just truly great my life is for allowing me these opportunities.  The entire trip has been a dream come true but Salzburg was incredibly special to me.

After a quick nap, the rain let up and I was able to go to the Salzburg Fortress, Hohensalzburg Castle. Construction for this Castle began in 1077 (wow!).  The weather had cleared enough that the views were gorgeous and it took my breath away.  I could have stayed there all night.

Then instead of looking up a restaurant I just stumbled into a beer garden that said it had beer made specially for them locally with an unfiltered option.  The lounge I sat in only served tapas.  I got a pumpkin soup, Veal with sour cream pumpkin seed oil sauce and porcini ravioli.   I can not even describe how good each item was.  Sometimes the best places, you just stumble upon.  (Great beer too, by the way).

I only had one solid day for Salzburg, not enough, but I will see it again.
